My name is Nicole Dickson and I am a teacher. I am
also a friend, student, daughter, sister, ally, education enthusiast, traveler,
adventurer and much more. I grew up in Mammoth Lakes, California, a small ski
resort with only five street signals. I spent much of my childhood outside
exploring the natural world. I have always been passionate about trying new
things and could often be found skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, swimming,
playing sports, hiking or fishing. My childhood experiences greatly influenced
the person I am today. I am still interested in exploring and am constantly
seeking adventure, both in my personal life and professional life.
I discovered my love for teaching
during my senior year of high school. At that time I was volunteering in a
second grade classroom at the local elementary school. I spent many hours in
the classroom interacting with students and gaining a greater understanding of
what childhood was like. It seemed like it had been forever since I was in
second grade, and I was amazed by how intelligent, intuitive and insightful
these seven year olds were. I was reminded of the magic of childhood. I also
came to understand that children truly are the future of our world. I realized the influence that
teachers had on students and that they had a responsibility to make sure that
these children grew into thoughtful, caring and compassionate adults. I had
always loved children, but it was at this time that I decided I wanted to
become a teacher. I wanted to make a difference in the world by sparking the
minds of my students, so that they would have the drive to change the world
themselves.
