Fifth Grade Units, Lessons and Activities

Coit Tower- San Francisco
While completing my multiple subject credential program I taught at a culturally and socioeconomically diverse elementary school in San Francisco, CA. I spent the spring semester teaching full-time at this school in a 5th grade classroom. During my time teaching fifth grade I developed, planned and implemented a variety of units, lessons and activities. I taught science lessons using the FOSS program and taught mathematics from the Everyday Mathematics program. I also created literature units that integrated social studies, language arts and visual art. I was even involved in the planning of the 5th grade graduation ceremony! Please check out some of the lessons that I taught. Enjoy!

Literature Unit: Integrating Language Arts, Social Studies and Visual Arts
  • This unit was developed in response to my students growing interest in natural disasters. At the time there had been a number of devastating earthquakes around the world, as well as a tsunami. We were coming up on the anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the students were very interested in the details and circumstances surrounding earthquakes. The activities and lessons focused on the power of nature. Activities included a literature circle, inference pyramid, poetry writing and painting with watercolors.
